The following information is provided by the “Fort Campbell Retiree Bulletin/ 2014”:
   “Preparing for the Inevitable”
Although most people would rather not talk about it, the issue of what needs to be done upon a retiree’s death is relevant and should be addressed in order to provide valuable assistance to the survivor/ survivors.
The Casualty Assistance Center (CAC) and the Retirement Services Office are available to provide support and assistance to the survivors.
(1.) Contact the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) @1-800-321-1080 and report the death. You will need the retiree’s social security number and the date of death when you call. DFAS will then take steps to close out the pay account to prevent overpayment.
(2.) If the retiree was enrolled in the Survivor Benefit Plan/ Program (SBP) or Retired Serviceman’s Family Protection Plan (RSFPP), DFAS will take additional steps to initiate pay accounts for eligible beneficiaries. DFAS will also send out paperwork that will need to be filled out and returned.
(3.) Next, call the Social Security Administration @ 1-800-772-1213, the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) @ 1-800-538-9552, and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (if the retiree was receiving disability compensation) @ 1-800-827-1000.
(4.) Lastly, contact the Fort Campbell CAC @ (270) 798-4727/ 4729 (or your nearest Military Facility).
(5.) Additionally, contact the Army Casualty Website @https://www.hrc.army.mil/site/active/TAGD/CMAOC/cmaoc.htm

 for valuable (needed) Veterans’ information.

(6.) It would also be a great idea to contact your counties’ Veterans’ Service Officer (VSO) whose telephone number may be located in your local directory.
(7.) PLEASE REMEMBER THAT IT IS THE FUNERAL DIRECTOR WHICH YOU CHOOSE WHO BY ORDER OF THE VETERANS’ ADMINISTRATION, MUST ARRANGE FOR MILITARY HONORS!
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!  PREPARE FOR THIS TRAUMATIC EVENT IN ORDER TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR THE SURVIVOR DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME, I.E., HAVE YOUR MILITARY UNIFORM “GOOD TO GO” AND BE SURE TO BRIEF YOUR LOVED ONES AS TO THE LOCATION OF YOUR IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS!
I make myself available to any Military Veteran in need of addition information and/or assistance.
